The "Sunny Mountain" as the Gargano promontory has been nicknamed for obvious reasons, is blessed with wonderfully clean beaches, secluded coves, and enchanting bays all of which lapped by the bluest of seas. From the white pebble beaches of Mattinata to the soft sandy dunes of Vieste and as far as the much loved seaside town of Peschici, the panoramic SS89 highway snakes its way along this, one of Italy's most spectacular stretches of coast.
Rodi Garganico and famous bathing resorts such as San Menaio are perfect both for families wishing to enjoy a relaxing holiday and for those eager to partake in the most exhilarating of water sports. Puglia is a great place for holiday makers looking for evening entertainment. Via the SS16 known as the Adriatica highway, we reach the buzzing seaside towns of Trani, Barletta, Molfetta, Giovinazzo where to stroll through streets lined with bars, restaurants, clubs, and shops of every kind, all of which open until the early hours of the morning. The same towns are also home to ancient cathedrals, veritable masterpieces of Medieval architecture which bear witness to the region's glorious past.
Travelling further South, the sun and the sea become the undisputed rulers: from the coast of the Ionic sea to that of the Adriatic, from the Gulf of Taranto to the Salento. The white houses of Ostuni, the castle of Otranto, and the lakes of Alimini all shimmer beneath a blazing sun.
The Primitivo of Manduria and the Salice Talentino are the most highly prized wines produced in the region, and provide the perfect accompaniment to the excellent cuisine served in the typical restaurants and small family-run hostelries for which the area is renowned. At this stage a trip to Ugento and Gallipoli is a must, as is the journey to Santa Maria di Leuca, the southern most tip of Puglia.
