The Villa del Poeta was originally owned by Dante Alighieri, undisputed father of the Italian language. In 1332 the property was acquired by the Portinari family. Over the centuries the villa has been owned by numerous families, each of which modified to some extent the building. In the 19th century the villa underwent a major restoration and two marble rounds with the profile of Dante and Beatrice were added on either side of the main doorway. Transformed in hospital in the 20th century, the building was severely damaged by bombing in the 2nd world war. Despite the ruined state of the property, Count Pier Francesco Rimbotti purchased the remains and financed the reconstruction which resulted in the villa's return to its former splendor.
