Palazzo del Capo Cittadella del Capo

The 5 star hotel Palazzo del Capo enjoys a wonderful location, situated in Cittadella del Capo, in a bay over looking the Tyrrhenian sea.

The building has a long and turbulent history. Some form of seafront structure has been present on the site since the early middle ages when the bay served as a landing point for sea faring merchants. From small fortified trading post the building was gradually expanded over the centuries until the aristocratic De Aloe family transformed the property in a grandiose summer residence in the late 1700's.

The estate was amplified so as to incorporate an extensive vineyard reaching from the sea towards the mountains and a 3000sqm garden was created, within the walls of which an orchard of citrus trees was planted.
The unification of Italy saw the construction of the first railway line along the Tyrrhenian coast linking Reggio Calabria and Battipaglia, a new form of transport which made the once vital maritime connection between Cittadella del Capo and Naples almost completely obsolete.

The subsequent decline of the area led to the abandonment of the Palazzo del Capo and it was not until the arrival of the tourist boom of the 1980's that the area began to flourish once more. In 1985 the Italian government declared the building as a site of 'artistic and historical importance'.

In 1987 a comprehensive restoration project was initiated and in 1991 the 5 star hotel Palazzo del Capo opened its doors to the first guests.
The rooms and suites of the Palazzo del Capo are all luxuriously furnished including a number of period pieces. Balconies afford breathtaking views of the sea and the coast of Calabria.
