Built in 1856 as home for the aristocratic family Ingham-Withaker, this fascinating building in the heart of historic Palermo became the Grand Hotel et des Palmes in 1874.
Ernesto Basile, the eminent architect of the Italian Art Nouveau, was responsible for alterations made in 1907 including the addition in the "Fireplace Saloon" of an inlaid ceiling similar to that designed by Basile for the Italian House of Deputies in Rome and a restyling of the main foyer, considered to be among the finest hotel lobbies in the whole of Europe.
Over the decades the Grand Hotel et des Palmes has welcomed many an illustrious personage; Francesco Crispi, who, in 1882, shortly before taking office as Prime Minister gave political lectures here; Italian Prime Minister Vittorio Emanuele Orlando, for whom a much talked of twelve-course dinner was served; the composer Richard Wagner, who, legend has it, wrote his opera "Parisfal" whilst staying in the hotel in November of 1881.
