Certosa di Maggiano

Certosa di Maggiano Siena

The Certosa di Maggiano is located in the countryside just outside the medieval walls of Siena and a mere 2kms away from the city's legendary Piazza del Campo. The building, which now provides luxurious accommodation for visitors to Siena, originally served as Carthusian monastery from 1314 when the building was constructed, right up until 1792 when Duke Leopold II expelled the monks and the property consequently passed in to the hands of private individuals. The present owner, Anna Grossi Recordati, acquired the ex monastery in 1969 and initiated an extensive restoration project finalised in the transformation of the complex in stunning hotel.

The Certosa di Maggiano, member of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux group, has just 17 guest bedrooms in what were once the cells of the Carthusian monks. These delightful rooms, of various dimension, have been decorated with a simple elegance characterised by period furniture and exquisite fabrics, and equipped with every modern comfort. In the hotel's public rooms guests can observe impressive works of art such as the paintings depicting the twelve emperors of Rome in the "Sala Imperatori".

The Certosa di Maggiano's "Il Canto" restaurant offers guests the opportunity to savor the finest Tuscan and Mediterranean cuisine, with a particular emphasis being given to the culinary traditions of Siena and the region's superb wines. The olive oil, herbs, fruit and vegetables used in the hotel kitchens is, in large part, obtained from the surrounding farmland, once cultivated by the Monks.
According to the season, guests dine in either the hotel's beautifully furnished, intimate dining room or beneath the arches of the main cloister.
A large heated swimming pool and tennis court are located in the grounds of the hotel. A small fitness room has been created for those wishing to maintain their exercise routine whilst on vacation. The hotel's heliport offers guests the possibility to arrive at the Certosa di Maggiano and the gates of Siena by helicopter.
